Background: Cutting balloon coronary angioplasty has been recently introduced into clinical practice. This procedure leads to controlled dissection of vessel wall by 3 or 4 very small blades – atherotomes that are attached to balloon catheter. Aim: Acute results and long-term outcome were evaluated in a group of patients treated by cutting balloon angioplasty. Patients and methods. Twenty-two consecutive patients (17 men, 5 women, mean age 60 ± 10 years) underwent coronary intervention using cutting balloon in the year 2000 and first half of the year 2001. Target lessions were in-stent restenosis in 15 patients (group 1) and de-novo bifurcation...

Conventional tests have known limitations in the diagnosis of syncope. Implantable loop recorder (ILR) is capable to monitor continously ECG over a period of several months with an option to record signals during a period of symptoms after post hoc telemetric activation. The aim of the study was to evaluate the significance of ILR in patients (pts) with recurrent syncope of unknown origin. ILR was implanted in 48 pts (29 female), mean age 51±17 years, (range 16-78 years) with unexplained syncope. A total of 21 pts (44%) had structural heart disease; none of them had significant left ventricular dysfunction. Of this study population 47 pts (98%)...

to assess efficacy of coronary intervention of left main coronary artery in the group of patients during 1995-2002 Methods retrospective analysis of the registry of coronary interventions in the Department of Cardiology of IKEM. The group of 50 patients who underwent percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) of left main coronary artery was evaluated. Results based on clinical indication to intervention we evaluated 4 subgroups of patients. I. the group of patients with an acute myocardial infarction (n=22): in hospital mortality was 55%, mortality of patients resuscitated during their intervention was 69%, mortality of patients with total occlusion...

Thrombophilia is a state of an increased tendency to the occurrence of thrombosis in veins and arteries. In both cases, it represents a multifactorial disease with different pathogenesis. In venous thrombosis, ceased blood flow and hypercoagulation are the main culprits, on the contrary, platelet activation and endothelial dysfunction in atherosclerosis are responsible in arterial thrombosis. A survey is given on known mutations or candidate phenotypes which are associated with thrombophilia and their practical point of view. Further clinical studies are warranted before we can definitively tell what tests are suitable for genetic diagnosis of thrombophilia.

In the past, intraoperative balloon coronary angioplasty was considered a useful method, which can improve outcome of coronary artery by-pass grafting. This approach has been abandoned due to technical difficulties. Authors refer a case of 74 years old woman with tight ostial stenosis of the left main coronary artery due to aortic valve replacement with bioprothesis 2 years ago. Her condition was complicated by significant paravalvular leak and left ventrical dysfunction. Intraoperative balloon angioplasty of left main coronary artery was performed following aortic valve replacement with mechanical prothesis. Eight weeks later, coronaroangiography...
